Not only have most of these businesses since disappeared, but many of the buildings that housed them have also now gone.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAmateur photographer Brian, who was at the time in his mid-twenties and working as a health service administrator, took the photographs on his Rolleiflex camera mostly in and around Moston, as well Blackley, Newton Heath and Harpurhey.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhile some of the original prints were initially shown in 1983 at Uppermill Photography Gallery (now Saddleworth Museum and Gallery), and exhibited at Liverpool’s Open Eye gallery in 1986, these images have gone mostly unseen until now.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBrian, 65, has lived in North Manchester all of his life, and now resides in Failsworth. He comments: “Even then, many of these shops seemed out of their time, with their quirky and characteristic details - shopfronts with old signage, old fashioned style shop tills and traditional weighing scales.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“Many of these independent businesses were under threat at the time, particularly with large supermarkets coming into Manchester, but also with shopkeepers coming up to retirement age and not having anyone to pass the business on to. Gatje\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e\"I know most people think the Whitney is my most successful building, but my personal favourite is La Gaude\" \u003c\/em\u003e- Marcel Breuer\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\"\u003eWhilst on holiday in the Cote D'Azure Leigh Bird visited the IBM Research Centre at La Gaude, designed by Marcel Breuer, and found an abandoned and seemingly unloved unloved masterpiece from one of the Masters of Modernism.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\"\u003eFinding the gate unlocked she wandered in and photographed this sleeping giant.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\"Designed by Breuer with Robert F. Gatje, an associate and soon to be partner, this remarkable building elevated on Y-shaped concrete stilts or “pilotis” remains in fine condition, and that’s despite suffering an earthquake in the early 2000’s (hence the steel bracing) and being vacated in 2015. This is testament to the cleverness of the design, the deftness of touch and the sheer ingenuity of construction.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eFor me, looking at the empty building, I felt no hint of melancholy. Perhaps my rose-tinted view was aided by the renowned Cote D’Azure light or the way the surrounding greenery frames and softens the site. Sure, it’s overgrown, but not to the point of strangulation. The planting akin to a whisper of a hug. Personally, I think it’s how proudly and harmoniously the building stands under the butte of Saint-Jeannet.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eOn my first visit, the circular bicycle store and sweeping arc of the B1 building were tantalisingly out of reach, forcing me to resort to photos taken through the barbed wire and locked gate. On the next of my two subsequent weekday explorations, the gate was thankfully open, and I was free to explore and marvel at the sheer scale of the structure and how the light played on the facets of concrete.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eMy last trip was to scratch an itch and find the B2 and B3 structures – built in 1968-70 - which were a delight, nestled in the ground and kissed by the dappled shade of mature trees.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eWith each visit, the site yielded more surprises, just as my contact with Alexandra L. Gatje (Robert F. Gatje’s daughter who, aged four, was famously posed by her father underneath one of the pilotis ‘for scale’) has done. I happened upon Alex on Instagram, via that famous photo (opposite, published here in colour for the first time). Since then, she and her family have far surpassed our request for a photograph or two and shared enough of the family’s archive to fill ten books.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p3\"\u003eI hope the images convey what I’ve seen at La Gaude; a vibrant building, ripe and ready to be occupied. Humourous, yet melancholic - optimistic, yet depressingly familiar - powerful, simultaneously weakened – are but a few of the apposite opposites that might be ascribed to these images.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eBy placing these contemporaneous subjects together in such deceptively simple compositions Sarah Hardacre enables a political view, enshrined in the personal and private. Other slides - developed from film now almost 50 years old – offered just a few strange hints of their subject including cooling towers and balconies.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe successfully developed images range from bakelite switches to Manchester modernist landmarks such as the curvy Gateway House outside Piccadilly Station. Colvin was born in India and, after being educated in Swanley Horticultural College, started her independent practice in 1922. She was the first woman to be elected president of any leading built environment institute, when she took on the role of President of the Institute of Landscape Architects in 1951. Her work not only defined the future of the Institute – and the profession – but also had lasting impact on the education of landscape architects. Her collaboration with Hal Moggridge through their practice Colvin \u0026amp; Moggridge ensured the lasting legacy of her work: the practice is now the longest running in the country and it celebrated its centenary in 2022.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs Elizabeth Darling writes in the Afterword ‘This wonderful exhibition opens the visitor’s eyes to new understandings of what constitutes the landscape of modern Britain.
