On mooching and the modernist community
A short film about the modernist mooches made by MA Film students from the University of Salford
The Modernist Society was recently approached by course leaders from the MA Film programme at the University of Salford, whose students were tasked with creating a short documentary exploring the theme of Community.
The students chose to focus on the vibrant community that has grown around the Modernist Society's popular architecture and design mooches — guided urban walks exploring modernist buildings across Manchester and beyond. To document this community in action, they joined one of our regular Manchester city centre tours, filming on location and interviewing participants alongside our mooch leader, Steve Marland.
The result is a beautifully crafted short film that captures the spirit of what makes the Modernist Society community so unique — a shared passion for modernist architecture, design, and urban exploration that brings people together time and again.
A huge thank you to the MA Film students at Salford for choosing us as their subject, and to everyone who took part in the filming.
