Find out more about artist Katie Schwab's research for her British Art Show 9 commission, on a free walking tour of public artworks in Manchester with The Modernist Society.
Katie Schwab’s commission blueprint of an emotion responds to public artworks by mid-century artists Hans Tisdall and Mitzi Cunliffe that feature on educational buildings in Manchester. The installation has evolved through research and community discussion on ideas of repair, alchemy and civic identity.
The walk will be led by Steve Marland and begin at Owen’s Park in Fallowfield with Mitzi Cunliffe’s modular panels mural Cosmos, with another stop nearby to see her Threshold artwork at Manchester High School, before taking the bus to The Whitworth to see Katie Schwab’s gallery presentation. The tour will then continue through Whitworth park and the University campus to see various works including Hans Tisdall’s newly restored The Alchemists’ Elements mosaic. The end of the tour will find us at UMIST with the Faraday building’s concrete panels by Anthony Holloway.
Katie Schwab works with installation, textiles, furniture and moving image to explore personal and social histories of craft, design and education. Her research focuses on domestic textiles and civic architecture from the inter- and postwar period. Embedded in the communities and contexts in which she works, Katie's long-term projects incorporate collaborative workshops, archival research and craft- based learning.
