SUBMISSIONS: Issue 53 OBJECT

the modernist magazine - is a quarterly print publication. You can submit an article or a photo story at any time, although we do work ahead of schedule on a theme-by-theme basis.

If you have an idea, we'd love to hear from you - please get in touch if you are interested in submitting an article. We are looking for essays or photo stories (around 1000 words) that focus on set themes below within twentieth century architecture and design. Our main focus is architecture, or art and design related to architecture such as interiors, glass, murals, furniture etc. These can be from anywhere in the world, but we do like to feature lesser-known examples.  As always, we invite contributors to interpret the theme in their own inimitable manner and with a broad imagination.

Issue 53: OBJECT

Contributions are sought for short articles (1,000 words or less) with strong visual content, as well as photo and image essays, for the Winter/Spring 2025 edition of the Modernist Society's magazine, the modernist. For the 2025 series, the magazine is tackling the letter ‘O’, and for this issue we are focusing on the word OBJECT.

Can you believe it? We are entering our 14th year and therefore the 15th letter of the alphabet! We are into the Big O, and we are looking for articles for our next issue about your favourite modernist OBJECT. Here we are entering the realms of furniture, ceramics, glassware, clocks, watches, cars, planes, magazine racks, matchboxes, snowmobiles, etc. You get the picture - we want articles both text-led and image-led about an OBJECT with a modernist leaning.

Seeing as the planet is jam-packed full of objects, it should not really be too difficult to find subject matter, but as usual, we are more intrigued by the weird, wonderful, and wacky as well as the classics. Want to write about an Eames hat rack? Sure thing. But do you know lots of interesting stuff about street lights? That’ll be cool too.

This is probably our broadest call-out yet, so we are really open to all suggestions, but try and keep it original. We know you all appreciate the finer things in life, and we would love to hear more about your favourite OBJECT.

Please send proposals directly to editor@modernist-society.org by Friday 4th October 2024 (5PM GMT). We kindly ask that you refrain from sending full articles at this stage; just a few sentences and/or images outlining your idea is all we need.

All those who submitted proposals will be contacted by Friday 18th October 2024 (5PM GMT). If your proposal is accepted, final articles and accompanying images will be required by Thursday 14th November 2024 (EOP). The issue is due for publication in February 2025. See www.the-modernist.org for previous issues of the modernist magazine.

Please note, The Modernist magazine is a not for profit social enterprise run on a shoestring, and relies on the generosity of like minded people and fellow travellers to share their ideas, words and pictures with us and our readers. There is unfortunately no budget available to pay fees for contributions as articles and photographs are requested in a spirit of commumity and friendly collaboration.

We might not be able to reply to every submission. Our apologies if you do not receive a response.
