A GUIDE TO RURAL CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY

Published by ARCA, Archive for Rural Contemporary Architecture,

The guidebook navigates through Cold War relics and functional typologies, as well as the poetic and aesthetically daring structures that have left indelible marks on the global landscape. 32 illustrated examples of buildings take the viewer on a contemporary Grand Tour where obsolescence results from changing technologies, shifts in government policy and cross-currents of geo-politics.

The artist and illustrator Peter Nencini has been commissioned to interpret a selection of the buildings focusing on their material nature with a series of unique artworks to accompany each chapter section.

ARCA explores interpretations of global landscapes that focus on often marginal and overlooked places. The archive creates a multi-layered reading of sites and an appreciation of the bleak, the sometimes failed and the uncomfortable. The archive collates and celebrates these contemporary post-industrial rural landscapes.
