Saturday 18th April | Meet at 11am outside New Art Gallery Walsall.

Come and discover Walsall’s hidden architectural gems on this friendly guided walk through this historic town.

For this special event, Stephen Marland will be joining forces with artist Tom Hicks, aka Black Country Type.

This mooch will be an opportunity to discover the key buildings in the town - and to learn more about Tom’s approach to capturing the urban environment.

We’ll start with walk through Walsall High Street ..at the top of the high street we’ll take a look at Geoffrey Jellicoe’s memorial gardens and wonderful Festival of Britain era apartments in St. Matthews Close.

Along the way we will see a concrete hippopotamus and a couple of drunken monks.

The walk will finish at the New Art Gallery Walsall. Opened in 2000, the gallery has become an important cultural venue for the Black Country. Designed by Caruso St John Architects, the building is recognised for its distinctive design and as the home of the renowned Garman Ryan Collection. This will be an opportunity to view the interior, including the wonderful gallery spaces that make intelligent use of materials, predominantly concrete, wood and glass.
