We cannot overstate how amazing this book is! A catalogue to accompany a recent exhibition in Krakow, it is jammed packed with amazing imagery - both archival and contemporary photographs as well as many illustrations and architectural drawings, accompanied by fascinating essays and beautifully designed.
This is the English text version but, as far as we know, this book is not available to buy anywhere in the UK - we got our copies directly from the exhibition organisers - the International Cultural Centre in Krakow.
Do not miss out on this if you like wacky and hardcore Central European architecture.
"The Book “Socmodernism. Architecture of Central Europe during the Cold War “is a fascinating and richly illustrated journey into the history of socialist modernism, which for decades remained underestimated and marginalized in the study of 20th-century architecture. The publication is not only an analysis of architectural phenomena, but also an attempt to reconstruct a fuller story of the post-war transformations of Central Europe.
The first comprehensive and panoramic account of the architecture of socialist modernity in Central Europe from the mid-1940s to the 1990s, from Tallinn to Ljubljana and from divided Berlin to Bucharest and Skopje."
