Visit to All Saints Church, Bristol (and Clifton Cathedral)
All Saints Church, 68 Pembroke Road, Clifton, Bristol, BS8 3ED
1100-1230 Friday 20th February 2026
A tour around the post-war additions to All Saints Church in Clifton, Bristol, just a stone’s throw from Clifton Cathedral. If there’s time, we will hopefully pay a visit to Clifton Cathedral too!
All Saints Church was rebuilt and extended in the 1960s following extensive damage during the Second World War, with a nave designed by architect Robert Potter and windows by John Piper – his largest singular piece of work. The church blended contemporary materials, such as concrete and fibreglass, with the existing building, and the original tower is topped by a towering aluminium flèche from the 1960s.
Its almost-neighbour Clifton Cathedral is one of the most significant post-war buildings in Bristol and was the first Roman Catholic cathedral built to new guidelines of the Second Vatican Council. This is what led to a 1000-seater church, with the congregation surrounding the High Altar. Towering above the villas of Clifton, a hexagonal fleche rises to a three-pronged spire enclosing a cross, representing the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
