Philip Michael Wolfson – “The Formative Years – Zaha Hadid”
"Although often referred to as ‘painted architecture’, the architectural proposals carried out in the studio of Zaha Hadid through the 1980s were some of the most stimulating and internationally published designs of the time. These project proposals presented through both drawings and paintings had a profound influence on architectural thought at that time as well as being sustained in today’s architectural environment.
Having been invited on graduation from the AA in 1982 to work with her, when there were just 3 of us in the studio, I was able to see the development of Zaha’s style and offer to the audience what I trust will be a unique opportunity to learn about Zaha and her work.
I aim to let this talk discover the many exciting projects carried out at that time. There was an excitement in architecture going on then, that still invites both exploration and
evaluation.

Philip Michael Wolfson studied architecture at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York and at the Architectural Association, London, England, where he was mentored by Zaha Hadid and began work with her on graduating in 1982. Subsequently, he spent the better part of that decade as lead designer in Zaha’s studio.
Wolfson’s own practice focuses on interiors, functional sculpture, sculpture and painting - working and exhibiting internationally.
Experimentation in the fusing of the fine arts, functional design issues and architecture is at the forefront of his works; pushing boundaries in the way in which we inhabit, perceive and interact with our surroundings.
