UTILITY x the modernist - Mid-century Merseyside: Houses for a new generation

Thursday 12th November at UTILITY 2 Flint St, Liverpool L1 0DH

6pm for a 6.15pm start

A talk by Dominic Wilkinson of the University of Liverpool and Neil Swanson, landscape architect and owner of Cedarwood.

The post war period brought a new wave of optimism, a hope for a better future, delayed by austerity, this began to manifest itself in the late 1950’s, through music, through art, and through architecture & design. A new generation of architects and their clients were inspired by the potential of Modernism to create exciting new spaces and patterns of living. On Merseyside these included Roy Jo Parker, Gerald Beech and Dewi Prys Thomas, who would design several small but beautiful crafted family houses.

This event will combine an exploration of the work of these architects with a first-hand description of what it’s like to live in the best-known example, Cedarwood, the Women’s Journal House of the year 1960 by Dewi Prys Thomas & Gerald Beech.
